Fred Nelson Lyons was born in Little River in 1881 and worked as a skipper of numerous ships that sailed to Mendocino and other places from the early 1900's - 1930's. Some of the ships that he worked on were the tank steamer Argyle, steamer Pasadena, steamer Samoa, steamer Edgar Bowling and steamer Virginian.
