Summary Thomas Kantala was born in 1862, in Finland, and after coming to the United States, changed his name to "Stump" (Kantala meaning stump in Finnish). His wife, Elizabeth also came from Finland with her oldest child, Hilma. They bought what is known as the Stump Ranch on Keene Summit in Comptche in 1901 from the Albion Lumber Company. Together they raised eight children. Bill and Jeannie Coulson, who have owned the Stump Ranch since the '70's, tell the story of the Stumps and their ranch.
This is the sixteenth in a series of local history conversations taking place on the 4th Sunday of each month at the Kelley House. Event occurred on April 23, 2006
