The stranding of the US Submarine H3 in Samoa Bay in Samoa, California. The USS Milwaukee and The USS Cheyanne are off shore in the distance.
On the morning of December 14, 1916, the submarine, H - 3 misjudged her position in Humboldt Bay and found herself in the surf off Samoa Beach, near the bay's entrance. A salvage operation pursued which resulted in the stranding of the USS Milwaukee.
The submarine was eventually put on rollers and pulled across the peninsula by Mercer Fraser Company of Eureka. It was then taken to San Francisco, lashed to a steam schooner, and repaired at Mare Island
